The Atkinson Museum

PERFECT DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE HISTORICAL AND THE CONTEMPORARY

For major world exhibitions

This is a museum prepared to host major world-class exhibitions. A manor house with almost 300 years of history and completely rehabilitated, which now meets all international museum standards and is capable of placing Porto and Portugal on the world art route.

Visiting the Atkinson Museum is, therefore, a true journey through time, allowing you to observe and enjoy the old and the new, the historical and the contemporary. A dialogue of world caliber, surprising and unmissable.

The first exhibition was with the Tate Collection

“The Dynamic Eye: Beyond Optical and Kinetic Art” was on display in the second half of 2023 and brought together more than 100 works by 63 international artists associated with optical and kinetic art. It was an exhibition of works by artists from 21 countries, with the combination of simple lines, geometric shapes and vibrant colors, to create optical effects or illusions and trigger complex and disruptive visual sensations.

A manor house

The Atkinson House has nearly three centuries of history. Built in 1760, it was property of various owners until acquired by The Fladgate Partnership. In 2000, the century-old house was carefully restored and modernized. It has an imposing adjacent chapel, which has undergone extensive conservation and restoration work: its sublime mural paintings were recovered from infiltration, humidity, dust and fungi.

Nasoni paintings

The frescoes in the Atkinson Chapel cover all of its walls. From ceiling to floor, in a rich and exuberant color palette, several biblical scenes are represented. They are wall paintings by Nicolau Nasoni, the baroque architect who left a considerable number of works in the Porto region during the 18th century, some of them iconic, such as the Clérigos Tower, the Sacristy of the Cathedral of Porto or the Freixo Palace.
