Atkinson Museum extends Tate Collection “The Dynamic Eye: Beyond Optical and Kinetic Art” exhibition until 19 November

Runninguntil 19th November, the exhibition "The Dynamic Eye: Beyond Optical and Kinetic Art" marks the start of an unprecedented partnership between the Atkinson Museum in Vila Nova de Gaia and the Tate. The exhibition brings together more than 100 works by 63 international artists dedicated to optical and kinetic art, and promises to please kids and adults alike over the coming months.

1st October 2023 - The newly opened Atkinson Museum is currently the third most visited space in the WOW Cultural District in Vila Nova de Gaia, all thanks to the exhibition"The Dynamic Eye: Beyond Optical and Kinetic Art". The group show, which brings together more than 100 works by 63 artists from the four corners of the world, marks not only the cultural agenda of the city of Porto, but also the start of the Atkinson Museum's partnership with the Tate.

"This unprecedented and international exhibition has made the Atkinson Museum one of our visitors' top three favourite spaces, along with The Wine Experience and Pink Palace museums. It's proof that optical and kinetic art, two parallel artistic movements that gained momentum during the 1950s and 1960s, can be accessible and democratic, arousing emotions and curiosity, leaving no-oneindifferent," explains Ricardo Almeida, WOW's Marketing Director.

With the mission of strengthening the connection between children and young people and the artistic world, the Atkinson Museum offers special prices for families and schools, as well as the organisation of guided tours or the possibility for youngsters to take part in the "Little Calders" workshop. In this activity, part of the educational programme designed for the exhibition,the little ones will have the opportunity to make their own mobile, inspired by Alexander Calder's sculpture "Antennae with Red and Blue Dots (1953), one of the pieces featured in the first room of the exhibition.

"The Dynamic Eye: Beyond Optical and Kinetic Art" features the largest number of works from the Tate Collection presented in Portugal and marks the beginning of an on going collaboration. Visitors are invited to discover the works of 63 international artists from 21 different countries, with very heterogeneous approaches and techniques, inciting the curiosity of the visitor, who becomes involved in a truly immersive exhibition. Rather than following a chronological order, this exhibition reframes optical and kinetic art as trends embraced by artists in different eras, geographies and cultural contexts.

Among the works included are recent acquisitions from the Tate Collection, such as Light Room (Jena), by Otto Piene, an evocative and sensory piece that literally immerses the viewer in a game of light and shadow, and Cybernetic Sculpture:Square, by Wen-Ying Tsai Tops, one of the pioneers of cybernetic and kinetic art. The exhibition also features a work by renowned contemporary artist Jim Lambie, whose psychedelic and colourful floors occupy the entrance to the Atkinson Museum. The exhibition "The Dynamic Eye: Beyond Optical and Kinetic Art" remains in Vila Nova de Gaia until 19 November and is curatedby Valentina Ravaglia, who is responsible for the Tate's international exhibition.

The individual ticket costs €15, while the family ticket (2 adults and 2 children,aged between 4 and 12) costs €35 and both have a 20 per cent discount for WOW Card members. The student ticket costs €10 and the same price also applies to students on educational visits for schools of any age, which can only be booked in advance.The guided tour and participation in the "Small Calders" workshop costs €15 and the exhibition can be visited every day, from Monday to Sunday, between 10am and 6pm.
